The thought of replacing your roof is one that homeowners usually want to push to the backs of their minds. It is a large investment that most of us aren’t ready to make. However, when you experience severe weather that leaves your roof compromised, you can’t just leave it along. You have to get it fixed. This leads to the question, “can individual shingles get replaced or are we looking at an entire roof replacement?” The answer varies for a number of reasons. Skyline Designs Roofing & Restoration is here to talk about different examples that can be repaired by shingle replacement and those that will require an entire roof replacement instead.
Can You Replace Just One Shingle?
Like mentioned above, just because your roof was damaged, it doesn’t mean that you have to replace your entire roof. Here are some situations where singles shingle replacement would be appropriate and sufficient:
– Cracked or Torn Shingles: Sometimes your shingles might be torn or cracked. If the damage to them is severe enough, the shingle might need to be replaced. If the crack is minimal, you might not need to do anything.
– Partial Missing Shingles: It is common for debris to land on your roof in a storm and cause a portion of the shingle to rip away. If a portion of the shingle is missing, the entire shingle will need to be replaced to keep your roof safe from water damage.
– Missing Shingles: If an entire shingle is missing, you will need to replace it as soon as possible since your home is at danger of water damage.
Examples of Complete Roof Repair
Even though it sounds nice to replace individual shingles rather than your entire roof, there are some circumstances where a complete roof replacement is necessary.
– Roof Age: If your roof is over 20 years old, you are more than likely better off completely replacing your roof rather than replacing shingles. The average roof is only going to last about 20-25 years before it needs to be replaced.
– Curling Shingles: When your shingles curl up on the corners, it is one of the first signs that the shingles have reached the end of their life. This curling can put your roof at risk of water damage should a store come your way as well.
– Granule Loss: Asphalt shingles are covered in tiny granules that work to protect the home from harmful UV rays. When the granules are all but gone, you can too have the roof replaced as well.
