Is it OK to Put a Second Layer of Shingles on a Roof?
Some home improvement contractors would argue that as long as the internal structure of the original roof isn’t compromised, and can withstand the weight of an overlay roof, adding a second layer of shingles is a quick, cost effective option. However, if the internal structure is damaged from impacts such as tree falling over the top of the roof, or water damage or pest damage, you can’t simply lay a new roof over the top of the original roof. And if you aren’t removing the original layer of shingles, how do you know what is lurking underneath? The fact is, adding a second layer of shingles will decrease the integrity of your new roof and lower its lifespan because shingles aren’t designed to have a second layer of shingles placed on top of them! Tear off roof removal is essential when the roof framing is compromised, or the roof already has a present overlay. Roof codes will not permit more than one roof overlay replacement. While a full tear off and replacement is more expensive, it is well worth the peace of mind from knowing all underlying issues have been addressed and the structural integrity of the roof is sound.
